On Saturday, November 12th at 1pm, translator Michele McKay Aynesworth will read from Frenchman Charles Rist’s World War II diary Season of Infamy.

Economist, banker, and writer Charles Rist was a well-known French intellectual in the tradition of Montaigne and Tocqueville. In 1939, as France anxiously awaited a German invasion, Rist traveled to America to negotiate embargo policy.

Days after his return to Paris, the German offensive began and with it the infamous season of occupation. Rist’s primary focus for the rest of the war was the welfare of those closest to him, including his Jewish daughter-in-law and three Jewish grandchildren, while in his diary he began to observe the unfolding of the war, meditating on its causes and consequences.

Though well-connected, Rist and his family and friends were not exempt from the perils and tragedies of war, as the diary makes clear. Season of Infamy is valued by historians as a closely-observed view of life in France under the occupation. Austinite Michele McKay Aynesworth, who translated the diary, will have photos and video to show as part of her introduction. Join us for this special event!
