Art exhibit at Library

The Lake Travis Community Library will display Painted Threads, the fiber artwork of Sherri Lipman McCauley, during the month of July. A Lakeway resident for over twenty years, McCauley considers herself a fiber artist, working with art quilts, collage, and surface design.

“Bright colors tend to excite me, as well as geometry and asymmetry,” said McCauley. “I typically work in the moment, working with paints and dyes on fabric, creating serendipitous designs. The simple line of a geometric shape, the blast of a colorful line, or the contrast of black against white makes my canvas sing.”

An avid volunteer in the community, including Girl Scouts, local schools, and various art organizations, McCauley incorporates her community involvement in her work. She is a member of many professional organizations including The Quilt Alliance, the Texas Federation of Fiber Artists, and the Austin Modern Quilt Guild. McCauley was recently awarded Honorable Mention in Modern Quilts by the Austin Area Quilt Guild in 2016.

For McCauley’s sixteenth birthday, she received a sewing machine. As the years went on, she learned to sew and quilt, making clothing to wear as a teenager. As an adult, she picked up quilting and continued to create wearables. After attending a host of different technique classes, McCauley found her niche in the art cloth community.

McCauley’s design work often starts with black and white marks, with the addition of symbolic colors and shapes to reflect emotions and events in her life. The color and shapes represent the artist’s interaction with the world. Her tools of choice include fabric reactive dyes, paints, and a host of threads. Printing, stenciling, painting, stitching, appliqueing, and fabric manipulation are all involved in getting her designs onto the cloth.

During McCauley’s month long exhibit, she will host a “Paint Your Own” art class for children ages eight to twelve on Wednesday, July 5 at 2 p.m. The artist will host a reception for the community on Friday, July 7 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. And, the community is invited to join McCauley for a demonstration of her methods at the Secrets of Painted Threads event on Monday, July 24 at 10:30 a.m. The public is welcome and invited to attend all of these events.
